Meet Nicola Magrath

Our Melton Mowbray Divorce and Family Law Specialist

Nicola Magrath is an Associate Family Law Solicitor based at our Melton Mowbray office.

Nicola qualified as a solicitor in September 2013 and has spent more than three years delivering trusted family law services across Melton Mowbray and the surrounding areas. Before specialising in family law she worked in legal costs, where she developed the sharp drafting and negotiation skills she now brings to every case — particularly useful when a financial settlement needs to be argued properly rather than simply accepted.

She advises on the full range of divorce work: no-fault divorce applications, fixed fee divorce, financial settlements and consent orders, pensions on divorce, and arrangements for children on separation. Nicola also has extensive experience advising unmarried couples on property and financial disputes, including TOLATA claims and cohabitation agreements.

Nicola was recognised as one of Leicestershire’s Best Solicitors 2025 and is a National Awards finalist. She is well known locally beyond the office too, leading the Rotary Women in Business Group in Melton Mowbray, which supports local businesses and community projects.

Outside work Nicola is married with two young children, and enjoys running and holidays with her family.

Let Nicola help you protect your best interests. Contact us today to arrange a consultation.

FAQ's

  • When should I speak to a divorce lawyer in Melton Mowbray?

Our advice is that you should seek legal advice as soon as possible when considering a divorce.

In fact some of our clients are not yet ready to divorce and are simply seeking early advice in order to weigh up their options and gain a better understanding of the divorce process. Being prepared at an early stage can provide you with the confidence and reassurance to move forward at your own pace. You can see Nicola at our Melton office, or by phone or video if that is easier.

  • How much does it cost to get divorced?

It is important to us that you have a clear understanding of costs to assist in helping remove some of the financial stresses divorce can bring, offering you peace of mind. We are pleased to offer our clients a fixed fee divorce which is transparent from the outset, ensuring that you will know exactly how much you will pay before the process begins, without limiting any legal advice to you.

We offer fixed-fee divorces for both the Applicant and the Respondent, which have been considered in line with essential legal advice.

    – Applicant – Not Disputed – £650.00 plus VAT, plus the court fee

    – Respondent – Not Disputed – £350.00 plus VAT

Please note that unforeseen events or contested issues may involve extra work outside of the fixed fee agreement, which will be charged as per our hourly rate.

  • How long does it take to get a divorce?

Under the no-fault divorce process in England and Wales, it typically takes a minimum of around 6 to 7 months to complete. This includes a 20-week reflection period followed by a further 6 weeks and 1 day before the Final Order is granted. However, while the legal divorce itself has set timescales, financial matters and arrangements for children may need to be resolved alongside it, which can mean the overall process takes longer depending on your circumstances.

  • Are finances dealt with at the same time as my divorce?

Divorcing your spouse will not resolve your finances – divorce only ends your marriage legally.

Finances are dealt with separately. See our Finances page for more information here.

  • Which court will deal with my divorce?

Divorce applications in England and Wales are processed centrally, so there is no need to attend court for the divorce itself. If a hearing is required – usually about finances or children — family matters for this area are heard at the Leicester County Court and Family Court Hearing Centre, 90 Wellington Street, Leicester, LE1 6HG, around 18 miles from Melton Mowbray. We will prepare you fully and attend with you.

  • Can I divorce without a lawyer?

Yes, you can divorce without a lawyer. However, we always recommend seeking advice from a divorce lawyer as soon as possible.

The benefit in applying for a divorce yourself is of course the cost, in that as there are no lawyers involved, you will not be required to pay lawyer’s fees. The downside to dealing with the divorce yourself, again, is that no lawyer is involved and the divorce may not go as smoothly as planned.

Our lawyers are specialists in divorce law and have many years of experience in dealing with the complex issues which may arise. In fact we see many clients return to us after trying, unsuccessfully, to deal with the matter themselves.

To apply for a divorce yourself online, visit the Government website here: https://www.gov.uk/divorce/file-for-divorce

When applying for a divorce a court fee will be payable. However, it may be that you are eligible for help with the court fee — see the link here to check if you are eligible: https://www.gov.uk/get-help-with-court-fees

Here at Andrew Isaacs Law we recommend that you seek legal advice before getting a divorce. We can offer a fixed fee consultation where you will be provided with tailored advice based on your own unique circumstances, without any obligation to start a divorce.
