Call us or send an enquiry through our online form. Our phone lines are open 24 hours a day, and outside office hours you can still book an appointment.
A member of our team takes a few details and arranges a meeting with one of our family lawyers.
At your meeting we look at your situation, explain your options and set out what happens next and what it will cost.
Same-sex couples have been able to marry in England and Wales since March 2014. The law treats a same-sex marriage in exactly the same way as any other marriage, so ending one follows the same no-fault divorce process. Neither of you has to prove that the other did anything wrong. One of you, or both of you together, applies online and confirms that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. The court then follows a set timetable:
That means a divorce takes at least 26 weeks from start to finish. Sorting out finances and children’s arrangements can take longer. Where the divorce is not disputed, we offer fixed fees: £650 plus VAT if you are applying, and £350 plus VAT if you are responding. The court fee of £628 is paid separately (court fee correct as of September 2026). Any work outside the fixed fee is charged at our hourly rate, and we will always tell you before that happens. Find out more about our divorce services.
Ending a civil partnership is called dissolution rather than divorce, but the process is almost identical. It is no-fault, it has the same reflection period and the same conditional order and final order stages, and it takes the same minimum of 26 weeks. We guide you through each stage, from the application to the final order that legally ends the civil partnership.
The final order ends your marriage or civil partnership, but it does not settle your finances. Unless a financial order is made, either of you could still bring a claim in the future. We help you agree who keeps the home, how savings and pensions are shared and whether maintenance is paid. We then put the agreement into a consent order so it is legally binding. If you cannot agree, we represent you in financial remedy proceedings. The same principles apply to every couple, whatever their gender. Read more about financial settlements.
If you have children together and cannot agree where they will live or how much time they spend with each of you, we can help. We advise on child arrangements, parental responsibility and child arrangements orders, and we keep your children’s welfare at the centre of every decision. Read more about children and family law.
Couples who live together without marrying or forming a civil partnership have fewer legal rights when they separate, whatever their gender. If you are separating from a partner and need advice about a shared home, see our page for unmarried couples.
